The calendar illustrated a design principle each month, bringing the permaculture philosophy to life.
Since 2008, examples have been submitted from people around the world as a way for you to explore the diverse ways in which permaculture can be put into practice. Developing an intuitive understanding of each principle over a month helps form an integrated picture of a lifestyle that lives in tune with natural systems.
100% of profits from sales of the calendar used to support permaculture projects internationally
Since 2013 we’ve donated over AU$22,000 to Permaculture Australia’s Permafund as well as other positive change makers like Robin Clayfield’s Dynamic Groups, The Permaculture Podcast and Formidable Vegetable.
Since 2014 the Permaculture Calendar included a useful moon planting guide and rainfall chart that is now available as a download here.
Featuring inspiration from around the world
We’ve been on the lookout for images to help give a wider interpretation of how the design principles can be applied, and showcased them in the calendar and on this website. Over 16 years of the calendar we’ve collected 192 examples with stories for each of them.
It’s been an ideal place to expose projects that demonstrate permaculture thinking to the hundreds of thousands of people that visit the site each year, as well as the many thousands more who see the calendar up in people homes and offices.
Like what we did in the calendar, you can set yourself an exercise of taking a photo to illustrate a particular principle. Or you may have taken an amazing photo that illustrates multiple principles. A great exercise for permaculture teachers to set students, or a photo competition for your local group.
